Make your way to the Kennet and Avon Canal, 15 minutes’ drive away, for peaceful towpath bike rides and days of boating or take yourself off-piste onto various local walks. Melksham, the local town, is 45 minutes’ walk from the site if you fancying a takeaway.
Or perhaps you might want to plot out your own route for a relaxed, daytime pub crawl (the first pub is 20 minutes’ walk away and there are many more within walking distance of the site) in and around Melksham.
Littleton Retreat is a well-maintained site with mainly level grassy pitches. It’s a simple sort of getaway – the type where guests can fully-unwind without too many distractions (unless you count the towpath adventures and Bath’s many Roman sites and cobbled streets, 35 minutes’ drive away, that is). The facilities consist of drinking water, an Elsan point, portaloos and waste disposal

Local pubs and restaurants and takeaways What will Wiltshire serve you up? There’s medieval architecture, a brewery and a working set of Shire horses in Devizes (15 minutes’ drive) – that might make you feel like you’re back in the olden’ days.
The same goes for Trowbridge (10 minutes), which is one of 23 Magna Carta towns (very important places 800 years back in time). Nowadays, it has a splendid weekly market and great shopping streets.
Tick off a bucket list item while you’re making your way around, as the stone circle of Stonehenge (half an hour) isn’t too far away either. Avebury (half an hour) has another ancient stone circle, which is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site.
If you’re not quite done with the historical itinerary, Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes) on the river Avon has an ancient bridge, 19th-century cloth mills and old weavers’ cottages. There’s an Elizabethan manor house in Longleat (half an hour) too, but another big attraction there is the drive-in safari park where monkeys can clamber over your car and lions can stride past your vehicle.
